16 ottobre 2011 CANADA Ferenczi’s Contribution to Contemporary Psychoanalysis

16/10/11

The Western Branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society is pleased to present its Annual Conference to interested clinicians.
Sandor Ferenczi was arguably second only to Freud in his contribution to the development of psychoanalytic theory and technique in the early part of the 20th Century. However, Ferenczi’s theories and technical innovations historically have been by-passed in favour of Freud’s metapsychological conceptualizations of mental functioning. Recently, clinicians have re-discovered Ferenczi’s clinical wisdom, and the relevance of his ideas to work with more regressed and traumatized patients. Ferenczi’s ideas on trauma and psychopathology, introjection and projection, transference and countertransference analysis, flexibility of analytic technique, the importance of spontaneity and honesty, analysis of the negative transference, and “return to the womb” heralded contemporary debates on various aspects of psychoanalytic technique. Ferenczi scholars and clinicians from Budapest, Turin, New York, Montreal, Seattle, and Vancouver will illustrate and debate Ferenczi’s relevance to contemporary psychoanalysis in panels and papers on Trauma and Psychopathology, Introjection, and Transference, and a Clinical Panel Discussion.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the conference, participants will be able to:

1. Appreciate how physical and/or psychological trauma can lead to psychopathology.

2. Understand how introjection and projection are key mechanisms in the dynamics of internal object relations.

3. Be aware of the technical centrality of transference and countertransference in psychoanalysis.
